Maximalism Is Cool. But Who Benefits?
Is this capitalism disguised as creativity?
The messaging is everywhere right now: “Bold is back,” “More is better,” “Stack it up.” Even in the store, my friend said to me the other day, “Makeup is back!” while showing me the new drop from Victoria Beckham (which is fabulous, by the way).
I love bold makeup. The artistry is real, and the creativity is incredible.
But here’s the thing: when every trend suddenly demands extra steps, more layers, and additional products, it’s worth pausing. Constant escalation isn’t always about expression — to me, it’s capitalism disguised as creativity.
The most powerful maximalist looks are intentional. They exaggerate structure with purpose. But when every season pushes more products just to feel relevant, it’s less about artistry and more about following the messaging of the trend.
The line between expressive and excessive is subtle — but it matters. Recognizing it is the real power for artists, creators, and anyone who wants bold makeup to feel like art, not obligation.
