Lesley Ware: Redefining Fashion and Identity Through Upcycled Art
Celebrating the Power of Sustainability, Self-Expression, and Personal Discovery in Fashion
Lesley Ware in “Art To Ware” - NYC
Celebrating the Power of Sustainability, Self-Expression, and Personal Discovery in Fashion
Lesley Ware (See her on Instagram here), the visionary behind Art to Ware, doesn’t just design clothes—she crafts transformative environments. Through her work, she breathes new life into discarded textiles, turning them into art that tells a unique story. Ware's spaces in Manhattan serve as a testament to sustainability, where upcycled materials become vehicles for personal expression. The act of dressing becomes more than just a routine; it’s a profound exploration of self and style. Having first met Lesley when I did makeup for her inaugural clothing line, our friendship and professional collaboration have blossomed over the years. From her thought-provoking pop-up installations to her workshops, Lesley has created a world where fashion is not just about what you wear, but about the story it tells and the personal journey it represents.
As a Makeup Artist in NYC, I understand the importance of expressing identity through art. Lesley’s approach is a true rebellion against fast fashion, offering a space where imperfections and history in fabrics are celebrated. By using upcycled materials, she allows her clients to engage with clothing on a deeper, tactile level—encouraging personal connection and discovery. She’s not just changing how we think about clothing; she’s creating an environment where individual identity flourishes. The imperfections woven into each fabric are embraced as a badge of history, reminding us that true style goes beyond what’s new, trending, or polished. It’s about wearing what resonates with who you are.
From her Westfield Shopping Center billboard to her inspiring workshops, Lesley continues to redefine what it means to embrace sustainable fashion. Her work is a tribute to those who find beauty in the imperfect and power in the stories that clothes can tell. She is a true trailblazer—an artist, a mentor, and a friend.

The Black Fantastic: A Visual Odyssey with Melanie Charles
Go behind the scenes with us as we explore challenging conventional beauty standards
Behind the Scenes for Melanie Charles Album Shoot- Universal/Verve - NYC
The "Y'all Don't Really Care About Black Women" album isn't merely a collection of songs; it's a sonic and visual testament to the Black Fantastic. As the hair and makeup artist for this project, I had the privilege of translating Melanie Charles's (See her on Instagram here) powerful message into captivating looks. Shot in New York City’s Brooklyn Navy Yard with Verve/ Universal Records we sought to redefine Black beauty, embracing the unexpected.
Bold colors, experimental textures, and unconventional shapes were used to disrupt the narrow beauty standards often imposed on Black women. We explored the idea of Afrofuturism, drawing inspiration from ancient African aesthetics and futuristic technologies. The result? Looks that were both defiant and celebratory, a visual testament to the resilience and creativity of the Black spirit.
Social media often presents a distorted and limited view of beauty, prioritizing trends and conformity over authenticity. However, this project challenged these narrow confines. We aimed to create looks that were a true reflection of joy, complexity, and artistry – a celebration of Blackness in all its multifaceted glory.

From Brush to Screen: A Cinematic Tribute to Edna Lewis for PBS
Crafting Nicole Taylor’s On-Camera Look for a Story Rooted in Legacy and Grace
Finding Edna Lewis - PBS Makeup by Remi - Makeup Artist NYC
"Finding Edna Lewis" is more than a documentary; it's an immersive experience, a journey into the heart of a culinary legacy that has shaped the landscape of American cuisine. The film, a masterclass in visual storytelling, unfolds with a quiet grace, allowing Edna Lewis's story to simmer and resonate. It's a meditation on food, memory, and the enduring power of tradition, a testament to how the simple act of cooking can become a profound act of cultural preservation. Starring Deb Freeman, the film feels like a carefully curated gallery, each scene a portrait, each interview a brushstroke, contributing to a larger, more nuanced understanding of Edna Lewis's impact.
Contributing to this rich tapestry was Nicole Taylor, whose insights and perspectives brought a vital contemporary voice to the narrative. As a Makeup Artist in NYC, it was a privilege to work with Nicole, to create a look that complemented her natural elegance while allowing her words to take center stage. The goal was to enhance, not to distract, to create a visual harmony that mirrored the film's own understated beauty. In a documentary that celebrates authenticity, the makeup needed to be equally genuine, a subtle reflection of the honesty and depth of the story being told. It was a reminder that the art of makeup, at its best, is about enhancing the subject's inherent beauty, not creating a facade.
"Finding Edna Lewis" is a cinematic feast, a reminder that history is not just a collection of facts, but a living, breathing entity, constantly evolving and influencing our present. It’s a film that invites us to slow down, to savor the flavors of the past, and to appreciate the quiet power of those who have shaped our culinary landscape.

Samara Joy: Five-Time Grammy Winner!
Samara Joy is Coming Through with Another Grammy Sweep!
Behind the Scenes with Samara Joy for “A Joyful Holiday” Verve/Universal Records
Samara Joy (See her on Instagram here), a force of nature in the jazz landscape, claimed not one, but two Grammy Awards last night for her holiday album "A Joyful Holiday" last night, and I feel so honored as the key hair & makeup artist on this project to have played a small part in bringing that vision to life. Seeing the album art, now adorned with Grammy gold is a feeling akin to witnessing a painting you helped create find its place in a celebrated gallery. It’s a validation of the power of collaboration, the magic that happens when creative energies align.
This marks Samara’s fifth Grammy win, and our second Grammy-winning album cover together – a beautiful synergy that I’m incredibly proud of. Last night’s wins – Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance – are not just accolades; they're affirmations. They speak to the power of music to move us, to transport us, to connect us. To be a part of Samara Joy’s journey, even in a small way as her hair and makeup artist on this project, is an immense privilege. It’s a reminder that art, in all its forms, has the power to inspire & elevate.

A Quick Fix Turned Unexpected Lesson in STEM
This quick fix taught me more than I expected
Finished Product behind the scenes with Model Mo
Amidst the controlled chaos of a shoot, a hairline mishap threatened to derail everything. Picture this: a model, sculpted and ready, a camera almost rolling, and then… a rogue strand, stubbornly refusing to cooperate. In the high-stakes world of a Makeup Artist in NYC, these micro-dramas can feel monumental. My initial instinct was panic, a primal urge to grab the nearest product and fix it. But something stopped me. Instead, I paused, observing the way light played on the hair, the subtle shifts in texture, the physics of the errant strand. It was a problem, yes, but also… a puzzle.
Suddenly, the language of cosmetics transformed. What had been mere tools of beauty became instruments of engineering. The precise application of hairspray, the strategic placement of a pin – these weren't just tricks of the trade, but miniature feats of structural design. I found myself thinking less like a makeup artist and more like a…well, a scientist. Deconstructing the problem, analyzing the variables, and testing solutions with the focused intensity of someone in a lab. And in that moment, amidst the hairspray and brushes, I saw a parallel with the women who navigate the often-unseen challenges of STEM fields. The quiet determination, the problem-solving prowess, the ability to see beauty in the mechanics of things – it was all there, reflected in the simple act of fixing a hairline.
It struck me how often we compartmentalize knowledge, separating art from science, beauty from engineering. But the truth is, they are intertwined, different facets of the same brilliant diamond. Just as a painter understands the chemistry of pigments, a makeup artist wields the principles of physics and material science. We are all, in our own way, problem solvers, builders, innovators. And perhaps, by recognizing the STEM within the seemingly superficial world of beauty, we can inspire more women to embrace the power of their own multifaceted brilliance.

Our Thorne Health Campaign is Live in Times Square!
Natural beauty is shining bright in times square
Dream come True! Thorne Billboard at New York Times Square, NYC
There's a particular kind of magic that happens in New York City, a convergence of dreams and grit that transforms the everyday into something extraordinary. For a Makeup Artist NYC like myself, the city itself is a constant source of inspiration, a living, breathing gallery of faces and stories waiting to be told. And now, one of my own creations, born from a collaboration with the incredible Ariel Belgrave aka Gym Hooky (See her on Instagram here), is gracing the billboards of Times Square. It's surreal, honestly. Like stepping into a dream I didn't even know I had. To see my work, my vision for Thorne Health, amplified on such a grand scale… it’s a moment I won't soon forget.
This campaign wasn't just about makeup; it was about capturing the essence of Ariel's strength and vitality, translating her energy into a visual narrative. It was about celebrating health and wellness in a way that felt authentic and empowering. As a Makeup Artist in NYC, I'm always striving to create images that resonate on a deeper level, that go beyond mere surface aesthetics. This project, with its focus on inner radiance and holistic well-being, felt particularly aligned with my own artistic philosophy. It was a chance to paint not just a face, but a story.
The energy on set was electric. Ariel, with her infectious spirit, made the entire process a joy. We laughed, we created, and we poured our hearts into every shot. And now, to see the fruits of our labor illuminated in the heart of Times Square… it's overwhelming in the best possible way. It’s a reminder that dreams, however audacious, can indeed come true. It's a testament to the power of collaboration and the magic that happens when creativity and passion collide.
This moment feels like a full-circle moment. It's a reminder of why I fell in love with makeup artistry in the first place: the power to transform, to inspire, to connect. It's a privilege to be a Makeup Artist NYC, to be part of this vibrant tapestry of creativity. And now, to have my work displayed in such an iconic location… it's truly a dream realized. I invite you to see the campaign for yourself and share in this moment with me.

Celebrating girl power and natural beauty at the US open
Game Day at the US Open 2024 with the Iconic Serena Williams x Wyn Beauty
The US Open. A symphony of shrieking sneakers, the thwack of tennis balls, and the electric hum of anticipation. But this year, something else crackled in the air – a palpable sense of girl power. I had the distinct pleasure of spending a week courtside, not just as a spectator, but as part of the WYN Beauty team. Think of it less as a makeup counter, more like an art gallery, where faces are canvases and the strokes of a brush transform, empower, and celebrate. And at the heart of it all? The inimitable Serena Williams (See her on Instagram here).
Being in Serena's orbit is like standing close to a supernova. Her presence radiates a strength that transcends the tennis court. It’s in the way she moves, the way she speaks, the unwavering glint in her eye. The energy was infectious. It wasn't just about the game, although witnessing her mastery was breathtaking. It was about the shared laughter, the whispered conversations, the quiet understanding of what it means to be a woman, a force, a legend. The experience was a reminder that true power lies not just in winning, but in the grace and authenticity you bring to the game, both on and off the court. It was a privilege to contribute to the artistry that framed such a monumental moment in sports history.
The buzz of the Open, the shared passion for the game, the electric atmosphere – it was all magnified by the incredible team I was working alongside. MBR x Wyn Beauty: These Folks Know How to Party
Let me tell you, the new concealers from wyn beauty are divine
Exemplary Performance - Behind the scenes with Wyn Beauty
My journey as a Makeup Artist NYC has been a thrilling exploration of the transformative power of cosmetics. I've witnessed firsthand how makeup can be a potent tool for self-expression, a means of amplifying individuality, and a catalyst for newfound confidence. Yet, amidst the glitz and glamour, I've always gravitated towards an aesthetic that celebrates natural beauty, that enhances rather than obscures the unique essence of each individual. This ethos resonated profoundly with my recent collaboration with Serena Williams' Wyn Beauty. (See her on Instagram here).
The opportunity to contribute to the launch of their captivating complexion line was an honor. Working alongside a curated group of influencers, I had the privilege of showcasing the transformative power of Wyn Beauty's exquisite skin tints, foundations, and concealers in a setting that felt more like an art gallery than a traditional makeup counter. The experience was a testament to the brand's commitment to empowering women through the celebration of their authentic selves, a philosophy that deeply aligns with my own at Makeup By Remi.
Wyn Beauty understands that true beauty lies in embracing individuality, in nurturing one's inner radiance. Their products, meticulously crafted with this philosophy in mind, deliver a flawless finish that feels as weightless as air. The concealers, in particular, are a revelation. They offer impeccable coverage while maintaining a luminous, skin-like quality. And the shade range? Simply exquisite. It's a testament to the brand's commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that every woman, regardless of her skin tone, can find her perfect match.

Proof That Diversity Is Not Just for Salads.
Our shea moisture "black men love" campaign received a telly award
Shea Moisture Black Men Love Campaign
Imagine a gallery, not sterile and white-walled, but vibrant and alive. Every stroke of color tells a story, each form a testament to the vast spectrum of human experience. This, to me, is the essence of beauty, and it's this very essence we celebrate in the "Black Men Love" campaign, a collaboration with Durable Goods for Shea Moisture that recently received a Telly Award in the Branded Content: Campaign - DEI category.
"Black Men Love" isn't about makeup in the conventional sense. It's about shattering the confines of what beauty can be, challenging the narrow narratives that have long dominated the industry. It's about celebrating Black men in all their complexities, their power, and their undeniable beauty. As a Makeup Artist in NYC, I've had the privilege of working with men of all backgrounds, each with their own unique stories etched on their faces. "Black Men Love" is a tribute to them, a canvas where they can express themselves authentically and rewrite the rules of beauty.
The Telly Award is a humbling recognition of our commitment to creating a space that is inclusive and empowering. It's a validation that the art of makeup transcends products and techniques; it's about storytelling, self-love, and the freedom to be unapologetically you. This journey of redefining beauty standards and breaking down barriers is far from over, but with every step we take, the gallery walls expand, bursting with color and vibrancy.

Webby Awards? We Did THAT!
A night of magic with the phelps twins & jam city HQ
Mischief Managed! The Weasley twins themselves, James & Oliver Phelps, on the red carpet for the the Webby Awards! Huge congrats to the entire team!
May was a month of unexpected alchemy. Not only did Makeup By Remi receive the prestigious Webby Award, but we also had the privilege of contributing to another triumph – this time, in the realm of gaming. Jam City HQ, creators of the enchanting Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, were honored with the award for Best Action and Adventure Game at the 28th Annual Webby Awards, and Makeup By Remi was entrusted with the men's grooming for this momentous occasion.
The ceremony, hosted by the captivating Amber Ruffin, unfolded at the elegant Cipriani Wall Street, an atmosphere charged with the electric energy of digital innovation. As the men's grooming team, my focus transcended mere aesthetics. It was about amplifying the inherent charisma of James and Oliver Phelps (See them on Instagram here), ensuring they exuded an effortless confidence that befitted their achievements. Under the dazzling lights of the stage, a subtle touch of concealer and a dusting of translucent powder were all that was needed to enhance their natural radiance, allowing their personalities to truly shine.

Madison McFerrin: 'I Hope You Can Forgive Me'
Our creative exploration of fear and love
Madison McFerrin “God Herself (Tune-Yards Remix)” Cover
As a Makeup Artist in NYC, my work transcends the physical; it's a meeting place of art and emotion. This philosophy was beautifully embodied in my collaboration with Madison McFerrin (See her on Instagram here) on her album 'I Hope You Can Forgive Me.' This project, a deeply personal exploration of vulnerability and love, offered a unique opportunity to translate complex feelings into visually arresting narratives.
Fear, though often seen as a villain, can be a potent catalyst for growth. During our creative process, we embraced this idea, using fear to propel our artistic vision and push the boundaries of imagination. Yet, love remained the compass, a guiding light that led us towards authenticity and self-discovery.
The photoshoot at Pier 59 in NYC became a canvas for this intricate dance of emotions. We meticulously crafted six distinct looks – three embodying the depths of shadow, three radiating with light – each a visual representation of the album's core themes. As the key hair and makeup artist, I championed a natural, unfiltered aesthetic, allowing the raw emotion of the project to take center stage.
The divine feminine, a powerful archetype of creation and transformation, served as a constant source of inspiration. It's a celebration of our inherent sensuality, authenticity, and the untamed spirit that resides within us all.
'I Hope You Can Forgive Me' is more than just an album; it's an invitation to embrace the duality of fear and love. It's a call to acknowledge their influence on our lives, and ultimately, to find liberation in their coexistence.

Beyond the Fade: A Grooming Guide
A simple guide to celebrate black men and self care
Behind the Scenes for Shea Moisture Black Men Love Campaign
Earning a Webby Award for our "Black Men Love" (See it on Instagram here) project was a humbling recognition, but it also ignited a flame within me. It propelled me to explore the essence of self-care for Black men on a deeper level. As a Makeup Artist NYC, I've come to understand that true self-care extends far beyond the surface. It's a transformative act of self-love, a path to inner and outer harmony that encompasses the mind, body, and spirit.
For Black men, this journey necessitates a nuanced approach that acknowledges the specific challenges we face. It's about creating a sanctuary of self, a space where we can nurture and celebrate our inherent beauty.
Imagine your skincare routine not as a chore, but as a daily ritual of artistic expression. As you cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate, you're essentially preparing your canvas. You're acknowledging your unique features, your textured skin, and your sculpted jawline – all elements that contribute to the masterpiece that is you. There's no need to conform to narrow ideals; instead, embrace the fades, the waves, the beards that distinguish Black masculinity. Invest in high-quality products designed to care for your hair and skin, and discover a signature scent that embodies your essence.
Self-care, at its core, is a deeply personal exploration. Experiment. Find what makes you feel confident and poised. It's not about achieving some airbrushed ideal, but about reveling in your own unique magnificence. Because when you feel good in your own skin, you radiate a light that illuminates the world around you.

These Ad Folks Gave Makeup by Remi a Webby!
Makeup by remi wins at 28th annual webby awards
Remi Odunsi, Professional Makeup Artist - New York City
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but what about a face? In the ever-evolving gallery of human experience, our visages serve as both canvas and commentary. As a Makeup Artist in NYC, I've come to view my craft not just as a beautifier, but as a storyteller, a weaver of narratives that transcend the superficial.
This philosophy formed the cornerstone of my collaboration with Shea Moisture (See them on Instagram here) on their "Black Men Love" short film project. It wasn't simply about applying product – it was about celebrating Black masculinity in all its richness and complexity. We shattered tired stereotypes and championed the power of authentic self-expression, each stroke of pigment a declaration of defiance and dignity.
Imagine a world where makeup isn't about masking, but about meaning. Where color palettes become instruments of social change, and every highlighted cheekbone a testament to resilience. That's the vision that drives my work, and to see it acknowledged by the prestigious Webby Awards is deeply humbling.
This recognition isn't just a personal triumph; it's a validation of the transformative potential that lies within the beauty industry. It compels us to wield our brushes not just for aesthetic flourish, but for amplifying voices, fostering inclusivity, and shaping a more equitable society.
