Sun-kissed for Summer at Kiehl's
Behind the Brushes with Kiehl’s
Behind the Brushes with Kiehl’s.
I just attended an incredible Kiehl's masterclass back in May that perfectly highlighted the intersection of high-performance skincare and premium color execution. The entire session focused on creating a seamless, sunkissed luxury glow that commands authority on camera without slipping into a greasy or heavy finish.
When you’re working with high-end clients who expect an absolute flawless standard, your strategy has to rely entirely on moisture stabilization. You simply cannot build an expensive, premium texture on top of a dehydrated canvas.
The biggest takeaway from that session is that true luxury makeup is quiet. It doesn't scream. It allows the natural lighting in the room or on set to move completely through the face instead of just bouncing off a thick, cakey wall of product. That exact restraint is what creates real dimension without obvious effort—and that is exactly what producers and lenses pick up on.

Luxury Kit Favorites for Summer at Kiehl's
My High-Performance Skincare Favorites
My High-Performance Skincare Favorites.
I waited to write about Kiehl's masterclass because I’ve been working the haul! Here are my exact luxury kit favorites from Kiehl's for a flawless, non-greasy glow:
Kiehl's Hyaluronic Acid: This is my absolute first step to flood the skin with weightless water-hydration and plump up the cells immediately.
Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream: The ultimate industry baseline. It delivers deep, beautifully balanced moisture that never interferes with your primers or foundation textures.
Kiehl's Avocado Eye Cream: A rich, dense, high-comfort holy grail. It perfectly preps the delicate eye area and locks things down to prevent your concealer from migrating.
Kiehl's Sunscreen: Lightweight, ultra-hydrating, and completely invisible on every single skin tone. Most importantly? Absolutely zero white cast or flashback under studio lighting. Gold for anyone that's melinated.
Kiehl's Lip Balm Treatment #1: An immediate remedy for any texture irregularities on the lips, creating a completely smooth, ready-for-color canvas.

This 3-Minute Rule Is Non-Negotiable
Why Speed Ruins Product Performance On Set
Too Much Speed Ruins Product Performance.
You can buy the most expensive, top-shelf formulas on the planet, but they will look completely cheap if your timing is wrong. On set and during consultations, I constantly see people over-apply rich, beautiful skin prep and then immediately go in with their complexion products. The result? The products slide, separate, and pool into fine lines within an hour because the layers never actually settled.
True sophistication takes a little bit of patience.
You have to give a dense hydration layer at least three minutes to fully fuse with your skin matrix before you even think about introducing color. This quick window allows the active moisture to sink deep into the tissue, leaving a perfectly stabilized, clean surface for your pigments to grab onto. Speed is the absolute enemy of a refined finish. If you want that invisible, expensive-looking skin under heavy HD lighting or out in the real world, you have to let the prep do its job first.

When Your Face Starts Changing
Why Aging Demands a Technical Protocol Revision
Let’s be completely real for a second. There is a distinct, quiet moment where your relationship with your own features shifts. You’re looking in the mirror on a random Tuesday and you realize your structural baseline has evolved. Maybe it’s a soft shift in volume around your cheeks, or a new kind of depth under your eyes, or just the way your skin bounces when the light hits it.
The natural, panic-driven reaction I see all the time is to overcorrect. People automatically start piling on more product, grabbing heavy concealers, or trying to force the exact same makeup lines they used a decade ago.
But true luxury is about adaptation, not desperation.
When your canvas changes, your protocol has to change with it. This means trading harsh, heavy contouring for strategic, light-reflective placement. Shadows on your face aren't flaws you need to bury under three layers of setting powder; they’re just new dimensions. They need intense, high-fidelity hydration and sheer textures that manipulate light to make the skin look instantly lifted. Evolving your routine isn't about looking "old"—it's about stepping into a much cooler, effortless level of style that completely owns the room.

Maximalism Is Cool. But Who Benefits?
Is this capitalism disguised as creativity?
The messaging is everywhere right now: “Bold is back,” “More is better,” “Stack it up.” Even in the store, my friend said to me the other day, “Makeup is back!” while showing me the new drop from Victoria Beckham (which is fabulous, by the way).
I love bold makeup. The artistry is real, and the creativity is incredible.
But here’s the thing: when every trend suddenly demands extra steps, more layers, and additional products, it’s worth pausing. Constant escalation isn’t always about expression — to me, it’s capitalism disguised as creativity.
The most powerful maximalist looks are intentional. They exaggerate structure with purpose. But when every season pushes more products just to feel relevant, it’s less about artistry and more about following the messaging of the trend.
The line between expressive and excessive is subtle — but it matters. Recognizing it is the real power for artists, creators, and anyone who wants bold makeup to feel like art, not obligation.

Your Features, Your Advantage
Why certain shades change presence.
AI and digital tools can make faces “perfect,” but perfection often means homogeny. Everything starts to look the same. That’s why your natural, distinctive features — a strong nose, hooded eyes, plush lips — are your advantage. These cues are what people notice, trust, and remember.
For brands, entrepreneurs, and production teams, the lesson is clear: presence comes from authenticity. Filters, AI, and trends may flatten individuality, but subtle, intentional beauty cues signal confidence, authority, and approachability.
Rather than chasing every trend or imitating AI ideals, focus on what’s uniquely you. By leaning into your features and presenting them intentionally, you create a brand and presence that stands out, resonates, and feels real — on camera, in campaigns, and in person.

Refresh Without Shopping
Edit before you expand.
Before grabbing the newest drop, pause for a moment. Big transformations rarely come from adding more — they come from using what you already have more intentionally.
Whether you’re a pro on set or refreshing a personal kit, small tweaks make a huge difference. Clean brushes, thoughtful placement, and focusing on what’s essential can elevate a look more than a new product ever could.
Look at what you’ve got. Could a blush go slightly higher? Could a highlight hit a different spot? Could your liner be sharper? These little shifts bring freshness without spending a dime.
Minimal doesn’t mean boring. It means every stroke and product earns its place. That’s how effortless, polished results happen — without chasing the next new thing.

Why Effortless Actually Works
The Biology of Natural Beauty.
I saw a breakdown on TikTok about why “natural beauty” dominates advertising — and honestly, it was kind of brilliant. The idea was simple: our brains are wired to respond to health cues. Smooth skin. Full hair. Long lashes. Concealed imperfections. These things signal vitality, health, good genes — and these are the faces we automatically trust due to biological preferences.
The faces we instinctively trust tend to look clean, clear, and under control — never heavy. Soft blush, natural highlights, lifted lashes, balanced structure — nothing fighting the face itself. Advertising leans into what the brain already recognizes. When the face and hair read healthy and balanced, it reads credible. Aspirational. Magnetic.
This is exactly why I consistently recommend natural, structured makeup for branding clients and entrepreneurs. It builds trust faster than anything overly dramatic ever could. The biology of beauty meeting branding in real time.

Straight Brows: The Subtle Shift That Changes Your Face
Structure without drama.
When was the last time you changed your brow shape? It can feel risky, but sometimes a small adjustment makes the biggest difference. This season, soft straight brows are quietly gaining momentum. Inspired by K-beauty, the shape creates a subtle lift while keeping the overall look fresh and modern.
In the image above, model Shannon Zhao wears the look effortlessly, with hair by Karl Payton, photography by Adrianna Favero, and makeup by yours truly—showcasing just how refined and wearable this brow shape can be.
Compared to highly arched brows, a straighter shape softens expression and brings balance to the face. The key is restraint. Minimal filling, a clean tail, and gentle upward feathering help maintain structure without overpowering the face. The result feels calm, polished, and slightly editorial.
If you want to experiment without committing, try trimming with small brow scissors rather than tweezing or threading. This keeps the change low commitment, and brows grow back quickly if you decide the shape isn’t for you. Beauty trends come and go, but occasionally a small shift in proportion creates a surprisingly fresh perspective.

If Your Makeup Looks Good IRL but Not on Camera
Light, shadow, and translation.
Looking flawless in person is one thing. Translating that same look on camera is another challenge entirely. Cameras interpret the face differently than the human eye. Lighting can flatten tone, exaggerate shine, and soften the natural structure of the face. Without small adjustments, even beautifully applied makeup can disappear on screen.
One of the biggest differences is shine. What reads as a healthy glow in real life can look overly reflective on camera. Slightly dialing back shine with a more matte finish often produces a better result. Highlight placement also becomes more strategic. Light naturally hits the cheekbones, brow bones, and the bridge of the nose. Emphasizing these areas restores dimension that cameras tend to flatten. Shadows play an equally important role. Subtle contour through the cheeks, temples, and jawline helps maintain structure and shape on screen.
When highlights and shadows work together, the face holds its dimension both in person and on camera. In a world filled with Zoom calls, social content, and constant photography, knowing how makeup translates on camera has quietly become an essential skill.

Prada Daydream
Luxury that works in real life.
Luxury beauty represents the most aspirational side of the industry. Beautiful packaging, elevated formulas, and the promise of effortless polish. But the real question is always performance.
I recently received a goody bag from the Prada Beauty team and a few products genuinely impressed me. The Prada Beauty Balm Gloss delivers shine without the sticky texture many glosses have. It works beautifully on its own, which means one less step in the routine. Simple, polished, and easy. Chef’s kiss.
The Prada Beauty Durable Gliding Eye Pencil hugs the lash line perfectly. It’s subtle, wearable, and incredibly easy to apply — ideal for those days when you’re running out the door but still want definition. These are the kinds of products that quietly improve a routine. A swipe here, a touch there, and suddenly everything feels smoother and more refined. Luxury beauty is often about aspiration, but the best products combine that feeling with real practicality.
From the lineup, these two are definitely worth the splurge.

Are We All Going Aspirational?
Polish without perfection.
If your look could talk, what would it say?
Beauty culture right now feels increasingly aspirational. Social media feeds are filled with elevated looks, perfect lighting, and camera-ready faces. The message seems clear: polish matters. But does every look need to be aspirational? As a professional makeup artist, I’d say the answer is nuanced. Perfection isn’t necessary, but intentional presentation can be powerful.
Polish matters because energy matters. It’s not about spending hours in front of the mirror. It’s about small choices that elevate how you show up. A slightly lifted brow. A cleaner liner. Choosing one feature to emphasize instead of five. These details subtly shift presence. They allow the “higher version” of you to show up without turning beauty into a full production.
In my work, I’ve seen people visibly change when their look feels aligned. Confidence sharpens. Body language shifts. The way others respond often changes too. In a visual economy, presentation inevitably affects perception. Not perfection — just clarity and intention. Aspirational beauty doesn’t have to mean unrealistic beauty. Sometimes it simply means showing up with a little more focus than usual.

The Most Underrated Tool in Pro Makeup
Small tool, major polish.
Is this just a triangle puff? Absolutely not.
To me its literally is one of the most underrated tools in pro makeup — it's literally perfect for everything - powders, liquids, creams, and touchups. The shape allows for precision where brushes can’t reach: corners, edges, and tight spots that subtly elevate editorial polish. Minimal layering, maximum effect.
I use it to blend liquid foundation, set under-eye powder without overdoing it, or refresh blush and contour mid-shoot. It’s a quiet tool that works behind the scenes to create a flawless, camera-ready finish without ever looking heavy or obvious. If you don't have one get one - or better yet, get a pack!
The triangle puff is proof that sometimes, the smallest tool in your kit makes the biggest impact.

Losing & Letting Go
Olivia Nelson in Paris by Stefen Pompee
After losing over 10 years of images in February, I realized that letting go is about trusting my higher power, my creativity, and my ability to start over. The result? A future feels more exciting because it’s an opportunity to start fresh and refine my aesthetic.
Sometimes it’s not about holding on; it’s about resetting. Whether it’s your glam, your routine, or your creative work, starting over can be the most luxurious edit. Spring is inherently for soft resets and intentional energy.
Letting go doesn’t erase your work; it makes space for new ideas, sharper polish, and editorial presence that feels effortless yet intentional. For me, this became a quiet lesson in confidence: in the studio, on set, or on the street, beginning fresh can be the most powerful statement of all.

Lymphatic Love: The Reset Is Real
First lymphatic drainage session (machine-assisted). Pre-treatment. Already calculating the ROI.
After a few sessions of full body lymphatic massage, subtle changes have started to appear. My posture feels tighter, my jawline seemed sharper, and the tension I didn’t even realize I carried seems like its starting to melt away. Even if the results are nuanced, the process itself is restorative, and in beauty, that kind of subtle shift goes a long way.
I went with the slightly more economical machine-based option (hence the suit.) and I find myself falling asleep most sessions. I’ve also cut sodium and carbs along with the weekly lymphatic massages but I feel like the depuffing is definitely giving. The takeaway? I think it works. Sometimes it’s less about a dramatic before-and-after and more about the process. Investing in myself makes me want to eat better and do better— that’s the energy that makes self love feel like high art.

Minimal Effort, Maximum Impact
Arselajda Buraku by Adam Wamsley
If March had a face, it’d be slightly lifted, barely there, and a bit smudged I think. I love the idea of glamour spots, diffused liners, & highlight pops. For me, the trick isn’t more product — it’s more precision.
A gentle highlight, the right brow angle: these are the things that make people actually notice you without ever thinking about technique. Even tiny adjustments can shift energy.
The right glamour spots change how your face reads, both in person and on camera. Minimal effort is the vibe not the reality. The idea is strategic, intentional beauty that makes you look editorial without trying too hard. Precision with a little bit of drama — you feel me? That’s the secret to polish that feels effortless.

Editorial vs. Everyday
Bring high-fashion polish into your daily routine.
High-fashion makeup doesn’t have to stay in studios. Its principles—light, placement, energy—translate to real life, from subway commutes to Zoom calls.
Take one editorial element—a soft highlight, gentle contour, or precise liner—and adapt it for your daily routine. Less intensity, more presence. Your face looks polished without feeling overdone.
This isn’t about copying a magazine spread. It’s about translating polish into your own style and energy. Even a small shift changes the way you carry yourself.
Combine this with subtle tweaks to brows or liner, and your everyday look can feel effortlessly elevated. Follow Instagram for inspiration.
